UKIS / BaBS - Broker

One of the general tasks of UKIS is to deliver various contents such as documents, product data from databases, process data from control systems and operating systems etc. In practice, this often means importing information from various heterogeneous IT systems. In most cases, the data also needs to be enriched, recalculated or converted into new numbers and reports.

Importing and transforming such data is the principal task of the information broker BaBS. BaBS transfers information to UKIS via an interface. BaBS acts as an information broker, which means that BaBS receives the data and the information from various sources and forwards the information to the clients.

The following systems, amongst others, can serve as possible sources for data in a BaBS installation:

  • process control systems

  • process computers

  • meters and measuring equipment

  • databases

  • software applications (e.g. SAP R/3, HAUK & SASKO’s fuel management system MBS, process validation, life cycle calculations etc.)

  • external sources (e.g. Internet)

As necessary, the data can be enriched or transformed, new data can be generated (e.g. by using scientific formulas, calculation algorithms etc.) and be stored in the BaBS database. For these processes, BaBS implements the strategy of storing only relevant data in the database. The original data remains (as far as possible) in the systems of origin.

BaBS may also be used as a stand-alone application. The clients, i.e. the information clients of BaBS, can be selected as necessary. Such clients could be UKIS systems, standard software for reports (e.g. MS-Excel, Business Objects, Crystal Reports etc.) and software applications from the area of plant management and process controlling, or other applications such as SAP.

The combination of UKIS and BaBS is a practical realization of surfing operating and process information.
